Modernist Guitar Stand

I believe music to be a universal language that has the ability to bring people together in great ways. I also think guitars possess the ability to bring a room together aesthetically, but they must be displayed properly to do so. In this project I aim to design a guitar stand that is both functional and beautiful while taking inspiration from modernist era design.

Research

For the research aspect of this project, I looked back at the work of my favorite modernist era designers. Most of the inspiration was drawn from the architectural forms of Zaha Hadid, along with the materials and colors often used by Charles and Ray Eames.

Sketches

With this is mind I began sketching different forms for the guitar stand. These had to give off the modernist feel, while being able to incorporate my selected materials of wood and leather.

First Model

I then selected two of the most promising sketches to computer model and 3D print. This first model was very organic and the two pieces could be taken apart to lay almost flat. While I do like this design, it would function much better as a portable stand rather than one made to be a statement piece in a room.

Second Model

This model seemed like a much better fit for what I was trying to achieve. Many changes would have to be made in terms of proportions and aesthetics, but it was headed in the right direction overall. Two shelves were also added at this stage to store equipment.

Final Model

By this stage the stand was mostly finalized with many of the necessary changes being made. Most of the structural pieces were made to the same thickness so that it could be cut from one large slab, one of the shelves was changed to a playing cushion, and the overall design was made to look more modernist.

Bill of Materials

This gives a description of the individual pieces and their functions, along with the material they would be made of.

This first render was done to show each piece of the final design.
